EFFECTS OF SOCIAL NETWORK ON STUDENT ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE.
This study investigated the effects of social network on the academic performance of secondary school students of Odeda Local Government, Abeokuta, Ogun State. The study vividly discussed the concept of social networking and academic performance.
The study equally highlighted the various forms of social networking sites majorly patronized by some selected secondary schools in Odeda Local Government, the positive effects, negative effects and the significant relationship between students’ Academic performance and social networking. The study adopted a descriptive survey design and the sample comprised 150 students drawn across (5) five secondary schools in Odeda Local Government, on the basis of (30) thirty per- school.
The instrument used for gathering data is a questionnaire, while simple average percentage were adopted to analyze the data gathered. It was discovered that social networking had significant effect on students’ academic performance in secondary school student in Odeda Local Government. The effects are both positive and negative. The findings also revealed that students use up to (3) three social network sites and averagely spend 9hours in a week. Finally, it recommended a collaborative approach between students, parents, social networking manager, teachers, mass media and the government towards proper utilization of social networking sites.
